18 injured, 4 critical: How latest clash highlights Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border dispute

At least 18 residents from Assam were injured on Monday (August 10) during a firing incident carried out by unidentified individuals from Arunachal Pradesh along the border. The attack occurred in Dhemaji district’s Mingmang Basti, in response to alleged land encroachment by Arunachal residents in Assam. The injured have been admitted to Gogamukh Rural Hospital, with four of them in critical condition, transferred to Assam Medical College & Hospital in Dibrugarh.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the clash as "localized" and said it has been "almost resolved amicably." The situation has been brought under control, and the incident has renewed attention on the decades-old border dispute between the two states, which shares an 800-kilometre-long boundary. The dispute stems from the transfer of land from Arunachal to Assam in 1951, which Arunachal claims to have retroactively claimed.

Efforts at resolution have included a tripartite committee in 1979, a Supreme Court-appointed local boundary commission in 2006, and a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding signed by the respective Chief Ministers, which limits the dispute to 123 villages and lays out a framework for joint verification.
