Wildfire in Indonesian national park grows

Jakarta, Indonesia — In response to an escalating number of wildfires during an unusually dry season, Indonesia has mobilized aerial support and ground forces to combat a blaze in a popular national park. The largest fire reported this week has ravaged approximately 176 hectares (435 acres) of Mount Bromo, situated within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, a premier tourist destination in the country.

Authorities have imposed a closure on the park to visitors as of Saturday, with park chief Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha announcing that the shutdown would remain in place until further notice. This containment effort has drawn hundreds of firefighters, disaster management personnel, police, soldiers, park rangers, and volunteers. In addition to their efforts, helicopters and drones have been deployed to assist in battling the fire, while crews have constructed firebreaks to prevent its further spread.

However, the fight against the Bromo fire has been complicated by the challenging terrain, with some hotspots located on steep volcanic slopes that prove difficult to access by land. The scale of this wildfire adds to a growing list of similar incidents across Indonesia, as the country battles multiple other wildfires concurrently.
