Wildfire in Indonesian national park grows

Jakarta, Indonesia - Indonesia has mobilized a significant response to combat a rapidly spreading wildfire in the popular Mount Bromo National Park, located in East Java province. The blaze has consumed approximately 176 hectares (435 acres) of the park, one of the country's most renowned tourist destinations. On Sunday, the Indonesian government deployed airplanes and hundreds of firefighters to tackle the fire, which has been exacerbated by an unusually dry season.

As of Saturday, the park had been closed to visitors, with park chief Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha stating that the closure would remain in effect pending further notice. Efforts to contain the fire have involved deploying helicopters, drones, and building firebreaks, while park rangers and volunteers have also contributed to the containment efforts. However, the difficult terrain, including steep volcanic slopes, has posed challenges to the firefighting operations.

The Bromo fire is part of a growing number of wildfires reported across Indonesia during the dry season. On Friday, a separate forest and land fire erupted in Central Java's Banyumas Regency, triggered by land-clearing activities. This fire rapidly spread due to the dry conditions, and in West Java, a fire broke out in the Suryakencana Meadow area of Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, prompting authorities to temporarily close hiking trails.

Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency reported that strong winds and extremely dry vegetation are contributing to the rapid spread of fires. El Niño weather patterns, combined with seasonal dry winds from Australia, have heightened the risk of wildfires across the country.
