Umno‑PAS pact not for Sabah, Salleh Keruak says politics driven by autonomy rights

Kota Kinabalu, August 9 — Umno Sabah treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak stated that a political understanding between Umno and PAS may not be suitable for Sabah due to its distinct political realities. He emphasized that the 2025 Sabah State Election showcased the strength of Sabah-based political sentiments, with concerns over autonomy, development, and Sabah's rights playing a significant role in voters' choices.

GRS and Warisan together secured 54 of the 73 seats in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, while independent candidates supported the formation of a GRS-led state government. BN, PN, and PH won fewer seats, with PH achieving only one seat. The same trend was observed in Sarawak, where the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) strengthened its position by focusing on Sarawak's interests, while Umno failed to establish a presence there.

Salleh suggested that any Umno-PAS understanding effective in Peninsular Malaysia might not work in Sabah, potentially causing the opposite effect if viewed as overly centered on the Peninsular. He stressed that Umno Sabah should work closely with Sabah-based parties, particularly GRS, prioritizing political stability, development, Sabah's rights, and the interests of its people.
