Police storm church, summon factions to command headquarters over power tussle

On Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Godwin Etim led a tactical squad to halt a service at the Chapel of Redemption Church on the University of Calabar campus, amid a persistent leadership dispute. The squad instructed the two factions to gather at the state police command on Diamond Hill Road, Calabar by noon on Monday. Tension flared when the armed force entered the church, prompting a chaotic scene as worshippers fled for safety.

Despite police intervention, the factions persisted in asserting their claim to leadership. Etim explained his presence, stating that intelligence suggested allowing the service to continue could result in lethal attacks. "My foremost duty as a police officer is to safeguard lives and property," Etim informed the congregation. He had conversed with the two Reverends, the two chaplains, and the board of trustees, all of whom concurred that the service should conclude due to the escalating tension.

He warned, "You can observe the ongoing strife here; if we do not implement this strategy, a confrontation may ensue." The two Chaplains, Rev. Dr. Joseph Ushie and Rev. Israel Eyo, are embroiled in a succession crisis, currently before the courts.
