ODM’s demands to Ruto ahead of key broad-based camp meeting

Ahead of a crucial broad-based meeting in Naivasha, ODM leader Oburu Oginga and President William Ruto will convene with governors, deputy governors, and MPs for a three-day retreat. The gathering, which includes representatives from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and other Kenya Kwanza affiliates, aims to bolster their working relationship and prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Discussions will likely cover the parties' working arrangement, the execution of the 10-point agenda, and preparations for the upcoming elections. The retreat will also address grassroots mobilisation, political realignments, and messaging on the administration's record. ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga highlighted that the meeting will update the party on the ODM-UDA partnership, review Nadco progress, and discuss compensation for police brutality victims.

With changes in political loyalties, particularly in Mt Kenya, attention will be on retaining support in the region while expanding its reach. ODM faces concerns over the growing influence of Linda Mwananchi, a political movement associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, which could impact ODM's influence in some traditional areas.

The retreat could see the administration rally behind President Ruto's 2060 vision, which is set for formal launch on August 12. The selection of the President's running mate might also be a topic, with ODM leaders potentially backing Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya. Political zoning remains a contentious issue between ODM and UDA, with ODM pushing for zoning in its traditional bases while UDA prefers parties to field candidates in every electoral seat except the presidency.
