Labor Union Sues Over Self-Driving Trucks

The California branch of the Teamsters, the nation’s largest labor union, has initiated a lawsuit against state lawmakers in response to new regulations they claim are favorable to autonomous vehicle technology. The union alleges these regulations were rushed through without adequate consideration of their impact on employment. The plaintiffs contend that the new rules pose an existential threat to hundreds of thousands of Teamster jobs and demand the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) halt enforcement of these laws.

The lawsuit, filed recently, targets several state agencies, including the DMV and Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration. Julie Gutman Dickinson, an attorney representing the union, criticized the DMV for keeping the public uninformed about the potential economic and human costs of the amended Autonomous Vehicle regulations. The DMV has a history of contentious relationships with autonomous vehicle companies, notably with Tesla's Elon Musk.

In April, California became the only state to permit testing of large self-driving vehicles, following the inclusion of a clause in a bill that introduced stricter limitations on driverless car operations. The Teamsters argue that the DMV failed to perform a mandatory economic study of the new regulations and instead utilized a process typically reserved for minor amendments with minimal economic impact.

The union claims this led to the erroneous conclusion that no jobs would be lost due to self-driving trucks. In contrast, the Teamsters estimate that over 200,000 semi-truck drivers could be displaced. They also express concerns regarding the potential dangers of entrusting the control of heavy vehicles to computer systems, as opposed to the risks associated with robotaxis.

A recent accident involving a Tesla Semi, though not testing autonomous features, resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
