Kaya, the Middle East's first walrus calf, doing well at Seaworld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

In the desert oasis of Abu Dhabi, SeaWorld Yas Island has welcomed a unique addition: the Middle East's first walrus calf, Kaya. Born two months ago, the calf weighs approximately 95 kilograms and is thriving in the park's Arctic Realm exhibit. Scott McCoy, the senior zoological director, explained that the calf's environment closely mimics the walrus's natural habitat, with controlled lighting and water temperature to replicate the Arctic conditions.

Kaya's mother, Smooshi, hails from Canada and was brought to SeaWorld Yas Island in 2023. The mother-daughter duo shares a special bond, with Kaya frequently seen accompanying Smooshi. McCoy noted that Kaya's mother is an exemplary caretaker, demonstrating her ability to balance observation and playtime.

Pacific walruses, like Kaya, can grow up to 1,250 kg and are considered a "keystone species" due to their role in providing valuable insights into the climate. Although not endangered, these majestic creatures are essential to understanding the health of the ocean ecosystem. As they consume on the ocean floor, walruses release nutrients that other marine animals rely on for survival.

Kaya's name, meaning "little mountain" in Inuit mythology, was selected through an online poll. The park has not ruled out the possibility of another walrus calf being born in the future, emphasizing their readiness to support such an event if it occurs.
