Independence Day: Lahore traffic police intensify operation against wheelie, hooliganism

LAHORE: As Independence Day approaches, Lahore's traffic police have ramped up their efforts to crack down on wheelie, reckless riding, underage driving, noise pollution and other forms of road hooliganism. Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi has instructed all circle officers to conduct a thorough and persistent enforcement campaign, especially on major and high-traffic routes.

Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in wheelies, as well as motorcycle mechanics who modify bikes to enable such hazardous behavior. Mechanics who remove silencers, alter exhaust systems or make other changes specifically to facilitate reckless riding will also face legal consequences. The police will also target individuals causing excessive noise, riding motorcycles without silencers or removing baffles, leading to public nuisance during the Independence Day festivities.

Mechanics will be informed of the legal repercussions of aiding in wheelie or illegal motorcycle modifications. The police have enlisted the help of Lahore Police to conduct door-to-door verification and monitor repeat offenders. Social media accounts promoting or glorifying one-wheeling and road hooliganism will also be targeted.

Daily enforcement operations, including large-scale checks at busy intersections, will be carried out to identify and apprehend violators. The Chief Traffic Officer emphasized the dangers of wheelie and urged parents to prevent their children from participating in such dangerous practices, stressing that a moment of reckless riding can result in permanent disability or death.
