Typhoon Dolphin: Shanghai airports cancel 1,300 flights as China evacuates thousands

Okinawa, Japan faced the wrath of Typhoon Dolphin on Saturday as the storm battered the region, leaving six individuals injured and more than 50,000 buildings without power. The elderly, three of whom fell during the storm, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. In Kagoshima prefecture, one person was also injured. China responded by closing ports and halting ferry services as the typhoon was expected to make landfall on its eastern coast between August 11 and 12.

The typhoon, characterized by 162 km/h winds and gusts up to 216 kph, was designated an orange-category storm by Chinese authorities, signaling a heightened risk of flooding and landslides. China's National Meteorological Centre forecasted waves of 5-to-8 meters in coastal waters off Zhejiang and Shanghai, while the capital, Beijing, prepared for potential flood-control and evacuation measures.

Taiwan also faced disruption, with 78 flights cancelled due to the typhoon, though authorities had not yet ordered evacuations.
