‘Gang war’: Suspected Irish crime kingpin charged after high-security Dubai extradition

Dublin - Alleged Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan appeared in court on Sunday, charged with directing a criminal organization following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates, amid heightened security. Kinahan, 49, was arrested in Dubai in April and was one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, identified by U.S. authorities in 2022.

The U.S. offered a $5 million reward for their capture. Kinahan was extradited to Dublin and brought directly to the Special Criminal Court for a highly unusual Sunday night hearing, where he was remanded in custody. The justice ministers of the UAE and Ireland characterized Kinahan as a high-profile individual sought for prosecution in transnational organized crime.

Kinahan apologized for not having a lawyer present, stating he had not arranged representation due to his time spent in Dubai and assumed a family member would handle it.
