Fire in southwestern Spain remains active as 470 evacuated

A wildfire in the Andalusian province of Huelva, southwestern Spain, continues to burn out of control as of Sunday, prompting the evacuation of 470 residents as a safety measure. Authorities remain cautiously optimistic about managing the blaze, which has scorched roughly 8,000 hectares, although not all of the affected area has been reduced to ashes.

The fire at Niebla, located approximately 70 kilometers from Spain's border with Portugal, is being battled by around 500 firefighters supported by waterbombing planes. The region's emergency minister, Antonio Sanz, stated that while the situation remains complex and a challenging day lies ahead, they are more hopeful than they were earlier.

Spain is grappling with a challenging summer due to wildfires, with approximately three dozen incidents forcing the evacuation of thousands of people, particularly in the central areas of the country. Back in July, a particularly destructive fire in the Avila region near Madrid was deemed the largest Spain had experienced in recent memory, consuming an estimated 50,000 hectares.

Another significant blaze early in July claimed 14 lives in Almeria province, also within Andalusia. This year, Europe has experienced a series of heatwaves and droughts, exacerbated by human-induced climate change, according to scientific assessments.
