Disaster Strikes Landmark Spanish Fireworks Display: Stray Shell Injures 27 in Altea

A catastrophic fireworks malfunction during the 40th-anniversary Castell de l’Olla pyrotechnic festival in Altea resulted in 27 people being injured overnight. Panic ensued when a stray shell detonated unexpectedly inside the spectator crowd near El Cranc beach bar. Preliminary investigations suggest the mishap may have been caused by an anchoring failure on an offshore launching platform.

Pyrotechnic mortars, typically angled seaward for safety, may have shifted out of position, causing the improperly secured shell to follow an erratic trajectory toward the shore. Swift medical and emergency responses managed a range of injuries, including blast contusions and severe thermal burns. Out of the 27 victims, 14 were treated for severe burns at Alicante University General Hospital's Burn Unit, with one individual remaining hospitalized in critical condition.

Emergency services, including 8 ambulances and numerous responders, coordinated efforts to manage the site and transport victims.
