As Dil Chahta Hai marks its 25th anniversary, the influential 2001 film continues to be celebrated as a landmark in Hindi cinema. However, one of its most iconic characters, Sameer, had a different fate in the making of the movie. Saif Ali Khan, who played the character, initially turned down the role due to his belief that he had very little to do in the second half of the film.

It was only after actress Dimple Kapadia intervened and emphasized the importance of the role that Saif reconsidered his decision. Javed Akhtar also assured Saif that the filmmakers would address the issue, which ultimately led to Saif's change of heart. The actor later reflected on how he came to appreciate the significance of his role, citing two standout scenes in the restaurant and the car.

Saif's dedication to the character paid off, as the film received an overwhelming response upon its release, making him feel like he had won an Oscar. Interestingly, Saif also initially opposed the decision to use live sound for the film, as it was a relatively unconventional approach in mainstream Hindi cinema at the time. He had suggested dubbing the film instead, but Farhan Akhtar's take on the dialogue convinced him otherwise.

Today, Sameer remains one of the most memorable characters in Dil Chahta Hai, and the film itself is regarded as a turning point in Hindi cinema.
