DFFE probes dead sardines along Western Cape coast

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) is conducting extensive inquiries into numerous reports of dead sardines along the Western Cape coast, spanning between Saldanha Bay and Gansbaai. Initial sightings of deceased sardines were documented over a week ago, with some instances occurring up to eight nautical miles offshore near Hout Bay.

DFFE spokesperson Zolile Nqayi announced that the department has not received any new reports since Thursday. In light of the ongoing investigation, the department is cautioning the public to refrain from collecting or consuming any dead fish found on local beaches. The DFFE is instructing specialists to analyze samples for marine biotoxins, while also examining water samples, stomach contents, and gills for indications of harmful algae.

Additionally, the department is urging all members of the public to avoid collecting, handling, or consuming any dead or dying fish located on beaches or floating in the sea in the affected coastal regions.
