Whale sighting: whale spotted off Poland's Baltic coast

After whale sightings off the Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a whale has now appeared off the Polish resort of Miedzyzdroje. "It was a whale, but we cannot say what species it was or whether it is the same specimen that was spotted in Germany," a spokesman for the WWF Poland environmental protection organization told the German Press Agency.

The several-meter-long marine mammal was discovered on Saturday afternoon near the beach off Miedzyzdroje, the PAP news agency reported. The Polish water rescue service WOPR informed the WWF's Blue Patrol, which checked the condition of the whale. The animal was possibly more than six meters long, a WWF spokesman was quoted as saying.

It was swimming freely and had not become entangled in fishing nets. Polish water rescuers escorted the whale A water rescue boat escorted the whale until late in the afternoon on its way east towards the coastal town of Wiselka to protect it from watercraft. The Polish water rescuers published a video of the marine mammal on social networks.

It shows the grey and white mottled back and the blowhole of the animal in the water. At the end of July, a whale had appeared in the port of Wismar. Two days later, there was another sighting on the open Baltic Sea at the level of Wustrow's seaside promenade. It was unclear whether this was the same whale as from Wismar.
