With approximately 15 million cats in Germany, many owners are turning to smart devices for their pets. These range from GPS trackers and GPS location apps to heath monitors and even AI-based facial recognition for detecting pain. However, experts warn that some of these technologies may do more harm than good.

GPS trackers, while useful for locating wandering cats, pose a risk of injury when cats cling to them while climbing. A study by the Deutsche Tierschutzbund (German Animal Welfare Organization) found that most cats rarely venture far from home, spending only about five hours outside per day. Similarly, AI-based facial recognition models have shown limited success in detecting pain in cats, as they often conceal discomfort to appear strong.

Human veterinarians, however, may be better equipped to recognize subtle changes in a cat's behavior and appearance that indicate distress.

Smart cat doors and feeding devices are also gaining popularity, helping owners monitor their cat's health and manage their diet. However, the Tierschutzbund stresses that while these technologies can assist human owners, they do not replace responsible pet ownership. Ultimately, the organization advises that high-tech solutions should only be pursued if they truly benefit the animal's well-being without causing harm.
