US Agrees to Monthly Patriot Missile Deliveries, Zelensky Says

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a deal with the US for monthly Patriot missile deliveries to Kyiv, though he cautioned that the current quantities are lacking. During a joint press conference in Belgrade on August 8, Zelensky mentioned that the 2026 deliveries are fewer than in earlier years. However, he did not reveal the specific number of interceptors being given or the motive behind the reduction.

Zelensky emphasized that the US holds control over anti-missile systems, stating, "Who has the anti-missiles and systems? Primarily the manufacturer – the United States of America." He acknowledged ongoing negotiations with European partners, including Germany, Poland, and Scandinavian nations, as potential suppliers. Germany and Poland are seen as significant contributors, while other countries are contributing in smaller amounts.

In a subsequent Telegram post, Zelensky confirmed that these agreements were made under the PURL program, which involves Ukraine purchasing weapons – primarily air defense systems – from the US using partner funds. The urgency for more imported interceptors stems from the inadequacy of current US supplies to meet Ukraine's air defense requirements.

Meanwhile, joint production agreements with the US have faced obstacles. In early August, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker announced that the US would not permit Ukraine to domestically produce Patriot interceptor missiles, contradicting earlier statements from the Trump administration. Whitaker noted that these advanced interceptors are heavily regulated and only authorized for manufacture by US companies.

This decision reversed earlier promises made by Donald Trump at a July NATO summit in Ankara, who initially suggested licensing domestic production due to concerns about potential future defections by recipient nations.
