UAE and Qatar condemn Iranian strike on Adnoc oil tanker

UAE and Qatar have strongly condemned an Iranian missile attack on an oil tanker belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) as it navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday morning. The attack, which did not result in any casualties, was described by the UAE's Foreign Ministry as a blatant disregard for Security Council Resolution 2817, which emphasizes the right to navigation and denounces the targeting of commercial vessels and the obstruction of international maritime routes.

Iran has been responsible for 16 such assaults on Adnoc vessels since the conflict began on February 28, according to the company's statement.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial conduit for approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas, has been largely sealed off by Iran following its deployment of mines and weaponry in response to US and Israeli assaults. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that reopening the strait would be contingent upon the United States acquiescing to Iran's demands, rather than being linked to ongoing talks between Iran and Oman in Muscat.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi disclosed during a presidential press conference that Tehran is nearing a consensus with Oman on a legal framework for the Strait of Hormuz but that its reopening is contingent upon the US compensating for perceived breaches of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He further stated that the previous Traffic Separation Scheme is no longer viable for Iran and necessitates the establishment of a new route, with military-to-military discussions underway regarding an interim arrangement.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, alongside Araghchi, asserted that the United States has violated the Strait of Hormuz clause in the JCPOA and that Iran responded accordingly.
