Drone enters Bulgaria, explodes near pipeline at Romanian border

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported that a drone entered the nation's airspace from the north and detonated near the Romanian frontier early Saturday. No injuries or property damage occurred, as the drone crashed into a sunflower field 100 meters from the Romanian border. Neither neighboring country had identified the drone prior to the incident.

The event transpired approximately 1,000 meters from Bulgaria's compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which links Turkey and Ukraine. Radev pledged to maintain vigilance and augment border surveillance. Post-incident, border police will shift anti-drone detection and countermeasure resources from the Turkey border to the Romanian border.

Radev did not disclose the drone's origin or type, stating that photographic evidence indicated the drone likely carried substantial explosives due to the blast's intensity and black smoke. The drone's size rendered detection within Bulgarian or Romanian airspace challenging. Bulgaria's Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed that the incident would be discussed at an upcoming North Atlantic Council meeting, while Romania, a bordering nation, has frequently experienced drone intrusions, including a recent May crash that damaged an apartment building.

In Germany, an explosive-laden drone was recently deactivated at Leipzig Airport, described by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt as a "new level of danger."
