Thousands evacuated as huge wildfire spreads in Canada

Vancouver, British Columbia - Over 20,000 residents were compelled to evacuate their homes overnight in western Canada as a swiftly advancing wildfire spread rapidly, threatening towns along British Columbia’s Okanagan Lake. The entire community of Summerland, with a population of approximately 12,000, was ordered to evacuate, alongside around 8,000 individuals residing near Peachland.

The extent of the damage to properties remains undetermined. The Bald Range wildfire was initially reported on Friday evening but expanded to an area of about 50 square kilometers (19 square miles) within hours, engulfing the smaller community of Faulder and traversing roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles) to reach Summerland with alarming speed.

Erick Thompson, an emergency official from the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, characterized it as one of the "quickest-moving, fastest-growing" wildfires the region had ever encountered. Thompson was compelled to leave the emergency operations center and evacuate his own family. Video footage from early Saturday revealed individuals enjoying at the Peachland Water Park in British Columbia, as traffic backed up surrounding him.

"I had to leave the EOC to bring my family to safety and leave this area," he stated in a video from his vehicle. "We’re heading south." Canada has experienced increasingly devastating wildfire seasons in recent years, necessitating mass evacuations and frequently spreading smoke across extensive areas of the country and the United States.

Social media videos reportedly showed multiple homes ablaze as residents fled, with flames visible on both sides of roads. One homeowner, Kerry Gold, and her husband, Mike Elsinga, left their residence around 12:30 a.m. after observing flames spreading beyond nearby mountains. "It’s scary. It’s moving fast," Gold remarked. The couple, who had recently relocated from Vancouver, had securely packed belongings, prepared a carrier for their cat, and intended to assist a disabled friend in evacuating.

Elsinga added, "You want to stay here and defend your home, but you also don’t want to get trapped in it."
