State of emergency in British Columbia due to wildfires

British Columbia has declared a state of emergency amid raging wildfires that have swept across western Canada, displacing thousands of residents and destroying homes and properties. Premier David Eby warned that the situation remains highly dynamic and threatening in his recent press conference. The Bald Range wildfire, which has expanded to around 9,500 hectares, prompted evacuation orders in Summerland, Peachland, and other districts near Okanagan Lake.

This wine-producing region, BC's second-largest, has been significantly affected, with Summerland's population of approximately 12,000 and Peachland's 6,500 residents now facing uncertainty. Mayor Doug Holmes of Summerland recounted how a neighbor advised him to prepare for evacuation as the fire grew, leading his family to flee north to Kelowna.

The District of Summerland, 45km from Kelowna, lost power and issued a boil water notice due to untreated water contaminating the system. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged federal support in firefighting efforts, with assistance from firefighters from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand. BC has deployed around 1,500 firefighting personnel and issued 38 evacuation orders and 49 alerts related to over 100 fires, with blazes consuming 4 million hectares in the country this year.
