Scotland closing in on head coach to replace Clarke

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) is on the verge of appointing a new head coach to replace Steve Clarke, following the latter's resignation after Scotland's World Cup group-stage exit. Clarke, who had signed a fresh four-year contract in May, stepped down from his seven-year role with the national team. Scotland will soon resume their football activities with a block of four Nations League fixtures, starting with an away game against Slovenia on September 26.

The search for Clarke's successor is being spearheaded by SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell and Craig Mulholland, who assumed the position of chief football officer in May. Maxwell and Mulholland have reportedly engaged in discussions with a diverse pool of candidates from both the UK and international talent. The interview process has been completed, and the SFA is reportedly close to making an appointment.

It remains uncertain whether the incoming head coach will be Scottish or hail from abroad. Steven Naismith, who served as Clarke's assistant, indicated last month that he anticipates continuing his involvement with the national team under the guidance of the new coach.
