PM Wong to announce details on support for families, costs of raising children at NDR

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to announce details about initiatives aimed at supporting families and easing the financial burden of raising children. The announcement will take place during the National Day Rally on August 23, which is the most significant political speech of the year. The government has been listening to the concerns of parents and families who are feeling overwhelmed by the competing demands of modern life, Wong stated.

To address these issues, the government is conducting a comprehensive review of the support systems in place for families at different stages of life, not only at the crucial junctures like marriage and parenthood but throughout the entire life journey. This review, spearheaded by an inter-ministerial Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup, was launched in April, with the aim of tackling various issues that have come to the fore amid a historic low in the country's total fertility rate.

In his August 8 National Day message, Wong highlighted the government's intention to examine aspects such as the costs associated with raising children, the availability of affordable infant care and childcare services, as well as other measures to alleviate the strain on families. The review is being driven by the recognition that economic growth and technological advancements must ultimately result in better lives for all Singaporeans.

Wong emphasized that the government is committed to harnessing and directing technology in a manner that benefits Singaporeans and fortifies society. He acknowledged the positive impact of social media on connecting people, sharing ideas, and expressing themselves, but also recognized the legitimate concerns of parents regarding the effects of excessive digital usage on children and young people, particularly in terms of mental well-being, relationships, and overall health development.

In response, the government plans to implement stronger safeguards to protect children and assist them in navigating the digital landscape responsibly. Wong also underscored the government's commitment to adopting artificial intelligence (AI) on its own terms, leveraging its potential to boost productivity and create more job opportunities.

This approach will be complemented by investments in skills and training, ensuring that every worker can adapt, grow, and thrive in the face of rapidly evolving technological advancements. As the world grapples with unprecedented challenges, including geopolitical conflicts, trade barriers, and weakened trust between nations, Singapore has managed to maintain economic resilience, Wong pointed out.

Despite the turmoil in the Middle East, the country's economy has remained robust in the first half of the year, with steady job creation and promising growth in the AI sector, particularly in the semiconductor industry. However, Wong expressed empathy for Singaporeans who are understandably concerned about their jobs, families, and the future.

In acknowledging these concerns, the government has taken swift action to support those affected by the crisis in the Middle East, as well as to ease the financial burden on households and businesses. Singapore remains committed to responding to the changing world, and the government is determined to emerge stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for whatever the future may hold.
