Last-play heartbreak as the Pumas lose 17-10 to South Africa

Argentina's men's rugby union national team, the Pumas, suffered a heartbreaking 17-10 defeat against South Africa's Springboks on Saturday. Coached by Felipe Contepomi, the Pumas hosted their opponents at the packed José Amalfitani Stadium, where fans were in high spirits, filled with star players, children, and former players available for fan interactions.

Argentina took an early 3-0 lead after just two minutes, Santiago Carreras landing a crucial penalty kick. However, South Africa quickly tied up the score with Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu's own penalty kick. The Pumas managed to score their first try just 9 minutes into the game, Benjamín Grondona capitalizing on a gap in the Springboks' defense. Carreras added the conversion kick to make it 10-3.

The first half seemed under control for Argentina, but in the 39th minute, South Africa's Canan Moodie pulled off a trick, fooling the Pumas defense and enabling Edwill Van der Merwe to score a try, tying the game. The second half proved more challenging for Argentina, as they struggled to control the ball and failed to create scoring opportunities.

In the 62nd minute, the Springboks took the lead through a scrum, Cameron Hanekom scoring the try, and Handre Pollard converting it, bringing the score to 17-10. As the game progressed, the Pumas appeared physically exhausted, making mistakes left and right. With a last-minute opportunity knocking, Matías Moroni was unable to capitalize on a clear path to score, leading to the final score. The Pumas will aim to bounce back in their upcoming match against Australia on August 29 in Jujuy.
