Andrew Lloyd Webber Urges Broadway Community to Address ‘Unsustainable’ Cost of Live Theater

Andrew Lloyd Webber expressed his disappointment over the closure of the Broadway production "Cats: The Jellicle Ball" and called on the Broadway community to acknowledge the financial challenges of running live theater. The iconic production, which featured 17 actors making their Broadway debuts, first opened Off-Broadway in June 2024 and later transferred to the Broadhurst Theatre.

Despite winning three Tony Awards at the 2026 Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography, Webber believed that the show's premature closing was a wake-up call for the industry. "Maybe the show's closing just might be remembered as the moment that caused everyone involved with Broadway to come to their senses and address the unsustainable cost of producing and running any new show on The Great White Way," he wrote on Instagram.

Webber, known for composing hits such as "Evita" and "The Phantom of the Opera," has won seven Tony Awards in his career. It remains to be seen what new show will take the place of "Cats: The Jellicle Ball" on Broadway.
