The long-term effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in US soldiers are increasingly coming into focus after the war against Iran. Almost 700 American military personnel were injured in drone and missile attacks on bases in the Middle East and in other clashes, according to the US military. Most of them had suffered traumatic brain injuries and had subsequently returned to duty, military officials said.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell described the large majority of injuries that occurred within two weeks as "mild concussions" last month. Concussions are considered less serious traumatic brain injuries. Many people affected recover within a few weeks. For some, however, complaints such as headaches, dizziness, and memory and concentration problems persist for months or years.

These symptoms are often referred to as "brain fog". US President Donald Trump has continued to express restraint about a possible agreement with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, he stated that the waterway, which is important for world trade, is "currently, as it were, open". Trump had previously said an agreement could be announced this week.

Iran announced that an agreement with Oman on the passage is in its final phase. According to Iranian information, the agreement is likely to depend on the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. A US government official told the AP that possible temporary regulations for transit through the Strait of Hormuz would not provide for permits or tolls.
