Drew Brees is emotional looking back on his career as he heads into the Hall of Fame

Canton, Ohio - August 6, 2026 - Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees made his way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, marking a significant moment in his remarkable career. Born six feet tall and just over 200 pounds, Brees defied the odds that he would struggle in the sport he loved, which is more prevalent in Texas than his home state of Louisiana.

Growing up, Brees briefly considered shifting his focus from football to baseball, but an injury to the starting quarterback at his high school led to an unexpected surge in his career. Brees didn't give up on football, despite facing a torn ACL and MCL during his junior year. He returned for his senior season, winning a state title and earning numerous awards. His success caught the attention of only two schools, Purdue and Kentucky, despite his accomplishments.

Choosing Purdue as his college football home, Brees joined Joe Tiller's first recruiting class in 1997. The Boilermakers had a history of losing, but Brees led them to four consecutive winning seasons and four bowl game appearances during his time there. His impressive performances caught the eye of the San Diego Chargers, who drafted him as the top pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft.

Brees' success continued in San Diego, as he led the team to two winning seasons in his final three years. However, a dislocated shoulder and a labrum tear sidelined him in the 2005 season. After undergoing major surgery, Brees faced another challenge when the Miami Dolphins dropped their pursuit due to concerns about his shoulder's health. The New Orleans Saints, however, saw potential in Brees and recruited him to help revive their struggling franchise, much like he helped Purdue.

Brees' time with the Saints proved to be just as successful. He led the NFL in completions, completion percentage, passing yards, and passing touchdowns in multiple seasons, and helped the Saints win the Super Bowl in 2009. Now, as Brees enters the Hall of Fame, he reflects on his journey filled with overcoming obstacles, including major injuries, limited size, and the responsibility of lifting struggling teams onto their shoulders.
