Popcru calls for thorough investigation of Reiger Park shooting case

The Police Union, Popcru, has urged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the shooting that resulted in the deaths of two SAPS Anti-Gang Unit officers and two women in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni. The ambush occurred on Friday night when the officers responded to gunfire. Popcru's national spokesperson, Richard Mamabolo, emphasized that the killing of police officers should not be normalized.

He stated that the incident must be treated as a national priority, necessitating enhanced Crime Intelligence, specialized units with adequate resources, proper staffing, reliable equipment, effective backup during dangerous missions, and improved protection measures for police officers operating in high-risk situations. The families of the two women killed alongside the two Anti-Gang Unit police constables expressed their struggle to cope with the tragedy.

During a visit by Ekurhuleni executive mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza on Saturday, the mayor announced that the city's metro police would be mobilized to combat drug and gang-related issues, pending a thorough police report. Roleen Lessing, one of the deceased, was described by her cousin, Sharney Blackmail, as a generous, jovial, and dedicated family member. The incident has left the family speechless.
