Arsenal sign Guimaraes from Newcastle in £75m deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a £75 million deal. The 28-year-old, who previously captained Newcastle, confirmed he had been looking forward to joining the Premier League champions this summer.

Guimaraes, whose four-year contract with Arsenal includes an option for a further 12 months, described the move as one of the "toughest decisions" of his life. He explained that while Newcastle holds a special place in his heart, he sought a new challenge both personally and professionally.

Newcastle expressed their best wishes to Guimaraes and his family during the transfer. The Brazilian's departure from Newcastle's training camp in La Manga, Spain, came after successful negotiations. He noted receiving supportive messages from teammates like Gabriel and fellow midfielder Declan Rice, who wished him well and joked about putting aside any past conflicts.

Reflecting on his decision to join Arsenal, Guimaraes stated he is at a point in his life where he is ready for a new challenge. He expressed his desire to win trophies and make history, expressing excitement about starting his Arsenal career. Guimaraes had previously played a crucial role in Newcastle's revival under former coach Eddie Howe, earning him the opportunity to lead the team to the 2025 EFL Cup final, where they defeated Liverpool, becoming the first team in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy in seven decades.

Additionally, Guimaraes contributed to Newcastle's qualification for the Champions League in both 2023 and 2025 before their relegation to 12th place the following season.
