Another overnight Russian attack on Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast kills 4, including 3-year-old child

On August 8, Russia launched a devastating overnight attack on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv Oblast, resulting in at least four fatalities, including a three-year-old child, and eight injuries, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky and local authorities. The victims, whose remains were identified as a grandmother, grandfather, and their three-year-old grandson in Brovary district, were killed in Pukhivka village. Additionally, a 15-year-old brother and a neighbor who rushed to help were among the four wounded.

President Zelensky expressed Ukraine's desire to end the war, emphasizing that only Russian President Vladimir Putin remains committed to sustaining the conflict through his use of ballistic missiles and drones. In Kyiv, a single civilian was killed, and four others were injured in the attack. The city's military administration reported damage to residential buildings, vehicles, and outbuildings in the Brovary district, along with a fire at a non-residential structure. Emergency crews were dispatched to manage the affected sites.

This attack on Brovary follows a particularly intense Russian bombardment of the suburb, which had already claimed eight lives during a train station attack earlier. The ongoing conflict has left Brovary reeling from a succession of severe assaults. In Kyiv, fires broke out in two garages and a commercial building in Holosiivskyi district, while another blaze was put out in an enterprise in Obolonskyi district.

Shortly after midnight, Ukraine's Air Force alerted residents to incoming waves of drones, followed by explosions heard across the city. Rescue efforts were under way by 3 a.m., as journalists from Kyiv Independent documented more explosions and confirmed the presence of ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv. The onslaught continued, with reports of additional attacks across various regions, including Dnipro, the country's fourth-largest city.

These intensified strikes are partly a result of Ukraine's ongoing air defense crisis, which has proven ineffective against Russia's barrage of ballistic missiles, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
