AADK backs mandatory drug screening for all Malaysia Airlines pilots, cabin crew

JERTIH, August 8 — The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) has endorsed Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) decision to mandate drug testing for all 1,260 active pilots and cabin crew members of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) post the recent arrest of a pilot in Indonesia. AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh revealed the move aligns with the zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and trafficking within the aviation sector.

Addressing the inauguration of AADK's Madani Foster Village (KAM) and Madani Foster School (SAM) programs in Felda Tenang, Ruslin emphasized the critical role of safety in aviation, given its direct impact on passenger lives. The AADK pledges cooperation in drug abuse detection, enhancing the Drug-Free Workplace (TEKAD) program, and conducting screening and prevention training for supervisors.

AADK previously conducted similar operations at MAS in April 2025 and AirAsia in December 2025. Ruslin stressed that isolated incidents should not tarnish the reputation of the majority of Malaysia's dedicated aviation workforce. He reaffirmed AADK's dedication to ensuring Malaysia remains drug-free, alongside government and private sector efforts.

The inauguration showcased that rural development should encompass human capital development, focusing on safety, prosperity, and drug-free environments. Felda Tenang's improvements included a football field pavilion, futsal and sepak takraw courts, Dewan Nurul Ehsan, solar lighting, and enhanced school facilities. While drug addiction rates in Terengganu decreased by 7.2% in Q1 2026, the 16.7% increase among children aged 10-14 and those aged 55-69 is a cause for concern.

Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS) such as syabu, yaba pills, and ecstasy were the most prevalent, comprising 81.9% of cases, followed by opiates at 16.9%. AADK urges collaboration with Felda, educators, Parent-Teacher Associations, and the local community to maintain quality infrastructure and remain drug-free in Felda Tenang and Besut.
