What the new half-billion-dollar fine against Meta could signal for social media's future

A New Mexico district court judge has recently ruled that the social media giant Meta must pay an additional $567 million in penalties, following previous orders totaling $375 million. This substantial sum comes in response to allegations that the company failed to protect children and teenagers from online harm, particularly on Instagram and Facebook.

The judge, Bryan Biedscheid, expressed concerns over the addictive features of the platforms, such as autoplay, infinite scroll, "like counts," and push notifications, which he deemed highly psychologically and neurochemically rewarding for adolescent users, leading to difficulties in abstaining from their use. Furthermore, the judge mandated the elimination of push notifications from 10pm to 3pm during the academic year for under-18 accounts, and stipulated time limits on app scrolling.

Despite agreeing with the state prosecutors, the judge didn't demand changes to the problematic features. Meta's spokesman, Andy Stone, expressed disagreement with the ruling and plans to appeal. This landmark ruling could have significant implications for the future of social media, especially concerning mental health concerns and regulatory measures, as other countries and states have started addressing these issues.
