'Vindictive motivations': Don Lemon seeks to dismiss charges from anti-ICE protest

Journalist Don Lemon is seeking to dismiss federal civil rights charges against him, alleging the prosecution is vindictive and aimed at silencing free press. Lemon faces charges of entering a church in St. Paul, Minnesota with anti-ICE activists and disrupting services, but claims his presence was in his role as a journalist. The January service was prompted by an immigration crackdown in Minnesota and the death of Renee Good at the hands of a federal agent.

Lemon's lawyers assert President Trump's and Justice Department officials' hostile remarks and actions towards him prove it's a "vindictive prosecution" aimed at punishing him for exercising his First Amendment rights. The filing cites statements from former Attorney General Pam Bondi, former Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, accusing them of trying to punish Lemon for reporting on a story the administration wanted to ignore.

Lemon's lawyers claim the government ignored his offers for a self-surrender and used "extraordinary channels" to pursue charges, including arresting him at midnight at his Los Angeles hotel where he was covering a music industry awards show. The government even requested access to Lemon's YouTube subscriber list, which was rejected by a federal judge.

Lemon's attorneys argue the government "circumvented" proper procedures for a search warrant, instead using an administrative warrant.
