U.S. Senate passes Russia–Iran sanctions bill

On August 7, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill granting the White House extensive power to enforce stringent economic sanctions against nations exporting energy to Russia and Iran, according to Reuters. The legislation secured a final vote of 86 in favor against 11, reflecting broad bipartisan backing after more than a year of deliberations.

Despite initial delays due to resistance from President Trump, who had favored unilateral decision-making on sanctions, the bill advanced to the House of Representatives, which will consider it following its September reconvening. The Senate's Republican leaders had initially withheld a vote, citing Trump's preference for White House control over congressional oversight.

The legislation empowers the president to temporarily suspend specific sanctions if it aligns with U.S. national interests, provided Congress receives a written explanation. These sanctions could be rescinded once the president confirms Russia has signed a mutually acceptable peace agreement with Ukraine, halted military operations in Ukraine, and Congress has had the chance to review the decision before implementation.
