Prisoner release row proving to be Burnham's first big test as PM

He removed some categories of prisoners from early release, such as rapists and child sex offenders, but not others.

Conservative critics have seized on this as evidence of a flawed early release scheme. They claim that the scheme has led to the release of dangerous criminals and those involved in grooming-related offenses. Despite Burnham's review, these groups are still set to be released early, causing outrage among victims' families.

The Conservatives are leveraging this issue to apply pressure on Burnham, with their leader, Kemi Badenoch, even highlighting it in an open letter to him. The Conservatives plan to keep the issue alive during the September parliamentary session.
