'Power Banks' for satellites? Bengaluru Company builds tech to keep ageing spacecraft alive

Bengaluru-based Aule Space has developed a novel solution to extend the operational life of aging satellite assets. Rather than attempting the more complex task of refueling satellites in space, the startup proposes to send smaller "jetpack" spacecraft that can dock with existing communication satellites and take over their propulsion duties. This technology, the company claims, could allow operators to extract up to five additional years of service from satellites that would otherwise become orbital relics.

Aule Space recently validated a critical component of its technology at Isro's Rendezvous Simulation Laboratory, where they were the first non-government entity to test at this facility. The startup's approach relies on computer vision and AI-powered onboard navigation systems, which enable the "jetpack" to dock with satellites using a single optical camera.

This camera provides the critical final approach and performs docking without the need for multiple specialized sensors, a notable departure from traditional docking systems.

The company plans to target geostationary communication satellites, which cost over $300 million each and generate significant annual revenues. The next step for Aule Space is an in-orbit demonstration scheduled for next year, with the goal of successfully performing non-cooperative docking in low-Earth orbit using camera-only navigation.

This mission would potentially mark the world's first private satellite docking demonstration of its kind, validating the technologies that Aule ultimately aims to deploy for extended life and revenue generation of geostationary communication satellites.
