China launches mysterious probe into security of Palo Alto Networks' products

China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC) has recently launched an investigation into the security of Palo Alto Networks’ products. The regulator's review is aimed at ensuring the safe and stable operation of critical information infrastructure, preventing cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities, and safeguarding national security.

Palo Alto Networks has maintained that its products adhere to the highest standards of business conduct and security practices. The company has stated that there is currently no impact to its ability to support customers or deliver its products and services in the region. This move echoes Beijing's 2023 investigation into Micron's products, which also resulted in a potential ban on sales to critical infrastructure operators.

While the Cyberspace Administration published its findings weeks later, it did not provide a detailed explanation for the decision. Micron later ceased selling its datacenter and server products in China, leading to significant revenue losses but opening opportunities for China's own domestic memory-makers. China has long accused Western tech companies of aiding US surveillance and offensive hacking activities, a claim that the Register believes Beijing may use in its assessment of Palo Alto Networks' products.

Despite the potential repercussions, the AI boom has proven lucrative for Micron, potentially rendering past financial setbacks less significant.
