Mexico, Argentina back Infantino as Fifa row continues

The leadership of Mexico and Argentina's football associations has backed Fifa president Gianni Infantino as he faces criticism over a recently abandoned proposal to sell parts of the World Cup's commercial rights. Despite CONCACAF - the federation representing Mexico, Canada, and the United States - calling for a "comprehensive reckoning" with Infantino's presidency, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has chosen to support him.

The Colombian Football Federation (CONMEBOL) has stated it will not endorse any actions to remove Infantino that do not involve a vote from all 211 member associations. The fallout from the proposal has cast doubt on Infantino's reelection bid for a fourth term at the upcoming Fifa Congress in March. Argentina's football association (AFA) has expressed support for Infantino's leadership and Fifa's work over the past decade.

However, individual national associations such as Croatia and England have withdrawn their backing, citing recent controversies surrounding the 2026 World Cup and Fifa's governance. The players' union, FIFPRO, has criticized Infantino's proposal as a "profound abuse of presidential power." Despite the controversy, Infantino still enjoys the support of 2022 world champions Argentina and faces no clear contender for the March election.
