Mahama Ayariga axed from parliamentary leadership

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has restructured parliamentary leadership by removing Bawku Central lawmaker Mahama Ayariga as Majority Leader. President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Ayariga as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs instead. James Agalga of Builsa North will now spearhead the role of Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business.

This move signals a larger administrative realignment aimed at enhancing government operations. Ayariga's shift from parliamentary leadership to ministerial responsibilities creates a significant void in the legislative body's leadership. The President formally communicated these changes to Parliament via the Speaker, adhering to Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

This executive reshuffle has also seen Defense Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei reassigned to the Ministry of Defence following the August 2025 military helicopter crash. Meanwhile, Ahmed Ibrahim will take over as Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, and Klottey Korle MP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been nominated as the Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The new majority team under Agalga will now need to focus on maintaining caucus unity and navigating executive policies within Parliament. Ayariga and Agyeman-Rawlings must undergo vetting by the Appointments Committee before officially commencing their ministerial duties.
