Mahama reshuffles cabinet, names Zanetor Rawlings for environment and reassigns Ayariga to Local Government

President John Dramani Mahama has made significant changes to the Ghanaian cabinet on August 7, 2026, following the devastating military helicopter crash in August 2025 that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers. The reshuffle aims to address long-standing vacancies and restore the government's operations.

The most prominent addition is the nomination of Klottey Korle Member of Parliament, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. This follows her previous service on the Parliamentary Committee for Environment, Science and Technology, where she has been a strong advocate for systemic solutions to environmental issues, particularly urban flooding. Dr. Agyemang-Rawlings would succeed the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Other strategic reassignments include Mahama Ayariga becoming the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Kenneth Gilbert Adjei taking charge of the Ministry of Defence, previously held by the late Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah. Ahmed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Banda, is now overseeing the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources. This reshuffle is part of President Mahama's efforts to stabilize the government and recover from the aftermath of the tragic helicopter crash.
