Hong Kong police arrest 16 over bar fight murder

Police have apprehended 16 individuals in connection with the murder of a 32-year-old businessman, Issac Yeung, during a violent bar altercation in Tsim Sha Tsui. The incident unfolded on July 26, when Yeung was fatally injured during a confrontation at Club Revel, a prominent bar in the area. Initially, nine men and three women were taken into custody, ranging in age from 24 to 52.

Subsequently, four additional men were arrested on Thursday, each charged with the crime of murder. These suspects - Lai Wing-lam, 29; Lee Man-tai, 33; Yung Wai-kin, 31; and Jacky Masanthiah, a 26-year-old national - are accused of participating in the attack alongside other unnamed individuals.

In court, the four newly arrested men appeared before Acting Principal Magistrate Cheng Lim-chi and were remanded in custody without applying for bail. Their defense attorneys raised the need for surveillance footage to support their cases, and their next court date is set for October 29. The investigation, led by the Regional Anti-triad Unit of Kowloon West, is ongoing.

The victim, Issac Yeung, was attending a friend's birthday party at Club Revel when an argument erupted. Subsequently, a group of men allegedly assaulted Yeung, resulting in severe head trauma, including skull fractures and internal brain bleeding. Despite receiving emergency brain surgery, Yeung remained in critical condition for six days before succumbing to his injuries on July 31. The police subsequently reclassified the case from a bar fight to murder.

Among the suspects, Tsang Wai-ching, one of the four newly arrested men, received another court appearance on Wednesday. He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again on Saturday. Additionally, Cheng Yuk-lun, 52, appeared in court related to allegedly assisting an offender by arranging getaway vehicles for Tsang. Cheng was denied bail and will be present in court with other defendants on October 29.

Furthermore, a 36-year-old truck driver was apprehended and charged with providing a getaway vehicle, intending to obstruct Tsang's arrest or prosecution. The penalty for murder in Hong Kong is a life sentence.
