EPA proposes naming Ghana’s plastics law after late Murtala Mohammed

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in Ghana is proposing to name the country's proposed plastics legislation after the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, a former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation. EPA's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Prof Michael Ayamga-Adongo, stated that this would serve as a fitting tribute to Dr Muhammed's dedication to combating plastic pollution and his advocacy for environmental protection.

The EPA is currently finalizing legislation to enforce a ban on single-use plastics, including Styrofoam food containers, which is set to commence in January 2027. Prof Ayamga-Adongo has urged Members of Parliament to name this forthcoming legislation the "Murtala Mohammed Law on Plastics in Ghana" to honor the late minister's contributions and inspire ongoing efforts to reduce plastic pollution in Ghana.

Dr Muhammed tragically passed away on August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crashed during a trip to launch a government initiative against illegal mining. He was among eight individuals who perished in the accident, including other government officials and military personnel. The EPA aims to establish a lasting memorial to Dr Muhammed's legacy by dedicating the new plastic pollution legislation to his name.
