National Handloom Day 2026: History and significance as PM Modi marks 12th celebration – ‘Salute the skill, creativity’

National Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7th every year to honor India's rich and vibrant handloom heritage. This day acknowledges the contribution of approximately 35.22 lakh weavers and allied workers, with a majority being women. Handloom tradition dates back to the Indus Valley Civilisation and is mentioned in ancient texts like the Rigveda, Ramayana, and Mahabharata.

The origins of this day trace back to the Swadeshi Movement launched in 1905 to promote indigenous industries and local weavers. India's handloom tradition has evolved through unique practices in different regions across the country, preserving manual craftsmanship and household enterprises.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 12th celebration of National Handloom Day, expressing his appreciation for the skill, creativity, and dedication of weavers and artisans. He emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the handloom sector as a crucial pillar of rural empowerment, women-led development, and the pursuit of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The National Handloom Development Programme and the Raw Material Supply Scheme are the primary support systems for the sector. The Union Budget 2026-27 introduced several new measures for traditional textiles, aiming to create global market linkages, branding, training, skilling, and improvements in production processes and quality.

Despite facing threats from mass production of powerlooms and mills, India's handloom exports amounted to around ₹1,330.96 crore in 2025-26. The leading export destinations were the UAE, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain. National Handloom Day 2026 encourages the exploration of the tradition craft's possibilities in the future while maintaining its relevance and character.
