Anwar pledges faster military and police promotions

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed plans to expedite promotions within the Malaysian military and police forces at a recent meeting with constituents in Masjid Tanah, Melaka. During the session, Anwar indicated the government's intention to streamline bureaucratic procedures and promote faster progression for personnel in these sectors.

The proposed system would harmonize the armed forces and police structures with those of the public services, with further details to be unveiled during the Merdeka celebration at Stadium Merdeka on August 30.

Anwar disclosed that the idea of accelerating armed forces promotions emerged during his recent visit to a military camp in Gemas. Speaking to reporters at Terendak Camp in Melaka, Anwar stated that the government plans to request a higher defense budget allocation for 2027 to bolster military preparedness and improve the welfare of personnel.

This additional funding, Anwar explained, would be directed towards enhancing military quarters, constructing a new hospital, and maintaining essential facilities such as water supply. The defense budget has already been increased by more than 35% over the past three years under Anwar's administration, but further investment is deemed necessary to maintain the country's defense capabilities.

A key aspect of Anwar's proposal involves the systematic and transparent procurement of military equipment, with a strong emphasis on avoiding profiteering and excessive commissions involving third parties. The Prime Minister highlighted Malaysia's improving economic situation, underpinned by a stronger ringgit, increased foreign investment, and controlled inflation.

These factors, according to Anwar, provide a conducive environment for the government to consider augmenting defense spending. The federal government's 2027 budget, scheduled for presentation in the Dewan Rakyat on October 9, will likely include the proposed increases in defense allocation.
