1933 - Korea's first female pilot, Park Kyung-won, passes away in a plane crash.

1990 - South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare reports that the number of South Koreans infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, had reached 100. By the end of June 2006, the total number of HIV-positive South Koreans stood at 4,227, including 773 who had died.

2003 - Around 30 student activists, part of the Hanchongnyeon, or the federation of university student councils, hold a demonstration in front of a U.S. military base in central Seoul. They demand that the United States sign a nonaggression treaty with North Korea.

2013 - South Korea agrees to a new round of talks with North Korea to normalize operations at the Kaesong industrial park, which had been shut down for four months. This meeting marks the seventh round of inter-Korean discussions on the Kaesong complex, following the failure of the six prior talks.

2018 - North Korea returns a South Korean citizen back to the South through the border town of Panmunjom. In a message to Seoul the day before, Pyongyang stated that the 34-year-old individual, identified only by his surname Suh, had unlawfully entered North Korea on July 22.
