In 661, China's Tang Dynasty, led by Su Dingfang, launched a series of attacks against Goguryeo, the kingdom of Pyongyang which incorporated parts of modern-day North Korea and northeastern China. After previous attempts at destroying Goguryeo failed, the Tang forces managed to besiege the capital city during the harsh winter. With food and strategic assistance from Silla, the southern kingdom, the Tang forces were able to reach and ultimately capture Goguryeo's capital.
