NPP’s ‘Democracy Under Attack’ demonstration underway

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched its nationwide protest dubbed "Democracy Under Attack," raising alarms over what the party describes as threats to Ghana's democratic governance. The demonstration, which features supporters donning red and black attire while holding placards displaying the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture, is set to commence from the Supreme Court and conclude at the Jubilee House, as per materials released by the NPP.

The protest aims to spotlight alleged infringements on free speech, apprehensions regarding the handling of opposing viewpoints, and what the party perceives as dangers to democratic institutions.

A representative from the NPP's Communications team and spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracle Aboagye, has asserted that the demonstration is a response to what the party claims are escalating efforts from the government to suppress dissent and undermine democratic institutions. The NPP maintains that this action is undertaken to safeguard civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic accountability.

These protests are unfolding amidst growing political tensions, with the NPP emphasizing that the demonstration is not directed at political opponents but is intended to defend civil liberties, uphold the rule of law, and ensure democratic accountability.

The government has categorically dismissed the claims of targeting political opponents, stating that law enforcement agencies and the judiciary function independently, and that all arrests and prosecutions are carried out in accordance with the law. The NPP's planned demonstration is anticipated to peak at the Jubilee House, where party leaders are set to address their supporters about their concerns over the current state of Ghana's democracy.
