Indian-origin PhD student Vikram Mubayi found dead after going missing during solo hike in California

Indian-origin doctoral student Vikram Mubayi was discovered deceased following a solo hiking expedition in California's Big Pine Lakes area, authorities have announced. Mubayi, a Chemical Engineering PhD candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), had journeyed to the area over the weekend. His absence prompted a large-scale search once he failed to return as scheduled and cut off communication with his family.

The Daily Nexus reported that Mubayi's remains were recovered from the Big Pine Lakes region on August 3. The cause of his death remains unknown, with no signs of foul play indicated by investigators. The investigation is ongoing. Mubayi's family last communicated with him at approximately 8:30 PM on August 1, sharing his GPS coordinates before the connection dropped.

His family reported him missing to the Inyo County Sheriff's Office when he did not return. Local authorities, aided by volunteers from Inyo County Search and Rescue, conducted a thorough search of the rugged mountainous region before locating his body. Mubayi's research focused on sustainable technologies and eco-friendly substitutes for traditional petroleum-based materials.

His LinkedIn profile detailed his work on bacteria and biological processes that decompose plant waste and plastics, with the goal of creating more sustainable materials. Additionally, Mubayi acted as a teaching assistant for various chemical engineering courses at UCSB. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was described as a seasoned hiker. No criminal activity is suspected in his death, and the case continues to be under investigation.
