WAEC open to BECE script remarking but rejects independent audit

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has indicated its willingness to remark Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts upon genuine inquiries, but has firmly rejected the proposal of an independent audit by private school associations. This stance emerged following a request from the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), who expressed concerns over the perceived accuracy of BECE results in representing candidates' true performance levels.

WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, explained on Citi FM that the organization's marking system is crafted to ensure fairness, and it does not permit the distribution of examination scripts to schools or associations for independent evaluation. Kapi emphasized that individual candidates may need a re-evaluation due to the possibility that a candidate's performance might not be the best among all.

He clarified that such requests would be processed by WAEC’s Chief Examiner, not by external entities, and that schools, not associations, should initiate these requests. Kapi underscored that while WAEC is poised to re-examine BECE scripts based on legitimate concerns, it cannot facilitate an audit where the scripts are scrutinized by external parties.
